We're
structured in a manner which allows policy on air quality issues
to be developed and debated by those who are most affected by it: regulated industry. We employ a common sense
approach to the development of air quality management programs.
To the extent
possible, industry is our partner in the development of air quality
plans, rules and policy. Through District-sponsored workshops
and meetings, our staff works in a pro-active manner with those
impacted by legal mandates to find the most prudent course of action
and to resolve conflicts to the maximum extent possible. We
believe that tapping ideas from all possible sources is the best
way to find problem solutions.
As a result,
local industry has more flexibility in meeting environmental mandates
than their counterparts in neighboring air districts and even some
nearby states.
We also publicly
recognize industry which sets an example for others. During
Pollution Prevention Week in September, the District confers the
prestigious Exemplar Award on the best of our regulated community whose work in the area
of air pollution prevention or control raises the standard for others. Year round our inspectors seek out gas stations who exceed regulatory
requirements and these stations receive the Mojave
Green Business Award, which includes a window
decal and advertising media.
We're proud
that our relationship with industry and our community is such that
they avidly support our annual Clean Air Fair, held every May, commemorating
National Clean Air Month.
