MDAQMD AHEAD OF GOVERNOR’S GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION SCHEDULE

Victorville -- The Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District has received its 2006 California Climate Action Registry Greenhouse Gas Inventory Certification, and the accompanying report indicates the District has made significant reductions that exceed the statemandated 2020 emissions reduction goal of 25% required under Assembly Bill 32. AB 32 is California’s landmark bill that establishes a first-in-the-world program of regulatory and market mechanisms to achieve quantifiable and cost effective reductions of greenhouse gasses. Under the bill – which was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2006 - California is required to reduce carbon emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020, for a 25% reduction. As such, major industries will be required to begin reporting their carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane emissions to the Air Resources Board in 2009. Until then, businesses can continue to voluntarily submit their carbon emissions to the CCAR, a nonprofit created by the state in 2000 to encourage businesses and organizations to track and ultimately reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The MDAQMD has been a member of the CCAR since 2003. [more...]
