Burn permits are not required for fireplace or BBQ use so long as no trash is burned and the fuel is clean, dry wood, propane or natural gas (methane).
The MDAQMD does not issue burn* permits. Burn permits are issued by your local fire agency; if you are unable to reach your local fire agency you can apply for a burn permit through Cal Fire. Burn permits obtained through Cal Fire are equivalent to Rule 444 Burn Permits. Note the issuing agency may charge a fee for a burn permit.
You must contact the agency that issued your burn permit (local fire agency or Cal Fire) for final authorization to burn prior to ignition. The State of California, the MDAQMD, and your local fire agency may restrict open burning for safety or air quality reasons.
*Rule 444 — Open Outdoor Fires, governs open burning and offers valuable information on what can be burned and when open burning is permissible. In all cases of open burning Rule 444 must be complied with. The MDAQMD may initiate an enforcement action against persons performing open burning in violation of Rule 444. To request a training or instructional burn complete and submit Instructional (Training) Burn Notification.
